How to read this list of Engineering & Development subreddits

Developer rooms are the easiest place to be caught pitching and the easiest place to be useful. The pattern in the data is blunt: the rooms with the highest focus are the ones organised around a runtime, a host or a stack, and the link that lands there is almost always an answer to a concrete problem. Rooms organised around a job title score lower because their product talk scatters across every category we track.

This is also the category where self hosting and pricing complaints do most of the linking. A hosting comparison thread will name a dozen products in an afternoon. That inflates raw volume without meaning the room welcomes a vendor, which is why we never rank by volume: the loudest room in a category is regularly the least useful one to post in.

If you sell a developer tool, treat this list as two lists. The rooms where links usually arrive as posts are where a launch or a write up can work. The rooms where links arrive in comments are where documentation, a good answer and a link at the bottom will do more than any announcement.

Questions about Engineering & Development communities

Yes. We resolve links to products, and an open source project with a site or a repository is a product like any other. A room where people trade self hosted alternatives will show a high focus score for this category, even though nobody in it is selling anything.

Because their product talk is concentrated. A room about one framework discusses hosts, editors and libraries for that framework and very little else, so a large share of everything linked in it belongs to this category. That concentration is exactly what the focus score measures.

Some are, many are not, and the arrival column separates them. Developer rooms are among the strictest on self promotion, and the ones with the strongest focus are often the strictest of all. Where the observed format is the comment citation, treat a launch post as a bad idea.

We count links to products we can resolve, including project sites and repositories. What we do not count is a mention with no link at all, so a room where people say a tool's name without linking it will look quieter here than it feels when you read it.
