How to find someone's Reddit account

Finding a Reddit account is easy when you have the exact username and the profile is complete. It gets harder when the spelling is off, when the account has been suspended, or when the profile looks empty despite years of activity. Each case has a different fix.

Start with the direct URL

Reddit profiles live at a predictable address: reddit.com/user/ followed by the username. Usernames are case insensitive in the URL, so capitalisation will not break it.

If that returns an error page, the account is suspended, deleted, or the spelling is wrong. Those are three different problems, and the page does not tell you which.

When the profile loads but looks empty

This is the most common surprise. Reddit lets an account hide its posts and comments from its own profile, community by community or all at once. The account can be years old and highly active while its profile shows a handful of items, or none.

Nothing was deleted. The content is still public in the communities where it was posted, which is exactly what a public archive records. Searching the username against the archive rebuilds the history the profile stopped listing.

When the account is suspended or deleted

A suspended account returns an error on Reddit and shows nothing at all. Its past posts and comments were public while it was active, so an archive holds them.

This is how you can still read the full history of well known accounts that Reddit removed years ago. The account is unreachable, its words are not.

When you are unsure of the spelling

1. Find one comment or post you know is theirs, in any thread.
2. Copy the username from the byline rather than retyping it, since l and I, and 0 and O, are the usual culprits.
3. Search that exact string, with or without the u/ prefix.

Guessing variants rarely works. Reddit usernames are unique strings, and a near miss returns a different person, not a suggestion.

What none of this will give you

• A real identity. Reddit accounts are pseudonymous, and no lookup turns a username into a person.
• Private messages. They were never public, so no archive ever recorded them.
• Posts in private communities. Same reason.
• Someone's other accounts. There is no reliable public link between two usernames.

Reading a public history is one thing. Using it to pressure, expose, or harass someone is another, and it is against Reddit's rules regardless of where you found the content.
