How to make your Reddit account private

Reddit has no private account toggle. There is no switch that turns a profile into a locked one the way Instagram or X allow. What Reddit gives you instead is a set of narrower controls, and knowing which one does what is the difference between feeling private and being private.

The four settings that actually do something

1. Hide your posts and comments from your profile

Since 2025, under Curate your profile, you can stop your profile from listing what you post. You can hide everything, or hide only the communities you would rather not be associated with.

This is the closest thing to a private profile, and it is also the most misunderstood. Read the next section before relying on it.

2. Keep your profile out of search engines

A separate setting asks search engines not to index your profile page. It affects the profile page only, not the threads you posted in, which remain indexable through the communities themselves.

3. Hide your upvotes and downvotes

Voting history is private by default on modern accounts. If yours is older, check it: a public voting record says more about you than most people realise.

4. Use a separate account for separate topics

The most effective privacy measure on Reddit is not a setting at all. Throwaway accounts exist because compartmenting is the only approach that survives a settings change.

What none of these settings can hide

Hiding your history from your profile does not remove it from Reddit. Your posts and comments stay exactly where you left them, publicly visible in the communities where you wrote them, under your username. Only the profile stops gathering them in one place.

That distinction matters because public archives read the communities, not the profiles. Anyone searching your username against an archive can rebuild the history your profile no longer shows. That is not a loophole, it is a consequence: the content was public, and it stayed public.

If you want it gone, not hidden

Hiding and deleting are different decisions with different outcomes. Deleting a comment replaces it with [deleted] on Reddit, which is genuine removal from Reddit itself, though copies captured before the deletion may still exist elsewhere.

1. Decide whether you want the content hidden from your profile or removed from Reddit.
2. For removal, delete the posts and comments themselves, oldest first, since those are the ones already archived.
3. Deleting the account does not delete its content: posts stay up with a [deleted] author.

The last point surprises most people. Removing the account removes the name, not the words. If your goal is that a specific comment stops existing, delete the comment, not the account.

A realistic view of Reddit privacy

• No private accounts. The feature does not exist, whatever a tool claims to bypass.
• Hidden is not deleted. The profile stops listing, the community keeps showing.
• Deleted is not erased. Copies captured while it was public may remain.
• Compartmenting works. Separate accounts for separate topics is the only durable protection.
