How to delete your Reddit history

Most guides tell you to delete your account. That is the one step that does not do what people expect: your posts and comments stay up, attributed to [deleted]. If your goal is that specific things stop being readable, the order matters, and the account comes last.

The order that works

1. Delete the content first, post by post and comment by comment, starting with the oldest. Those have been public the longest and are the most widely copied.
2. Check your saved and hidden lists, which many people forget. They are private, but they persist.
3. Review your subscriptions and profile details, since your communities say as much about you as your comments.
4. Only then delete the account, if you still want to.

Reversing this order is the common mistake. Once the account is gone you can no longer sign in, and you can no longer delete anything it wrote.

Deleting the account removes the name, not the words. A thread you started stays up, with its title, its body, and its replies, under a [deleted] author.

Deleting in bulk

Reddit has no built in button to erase everything at once. Third party scripts exist and they carry a real cost: they need account access, they can miss items, and a script that fails halfway leaves you unsure of what remains.

If you use one, audit the result afterwards rather than trusting its report. Searching your own username against a public archive shows what a stranger can still find, which is the only measure that matters.

What survives every method

• Copies captured while the content was public. Archives record posts and comments as they are published, and deleting on Reddit does not reach those copies.
• Quotes in replies. Someone who quoted your comment leaves your words in their own, which you cannot delete.
• Screenshots. Obvious, and still the most common way old comments resurface.
• Anything already indexed. Search engines drop deleted pages eventually, but eventually can be months.

This is not a reason to skip deleting. Removing content from Reddit removes it from the place where almost everyone will look. It is a reason to be realistic about the difference between deleted and never published.

Hiding instead of deleting

If your concern is that your profile paints a picture of you, Reddit now lets you hide your posts and comments from your profile without deleting anything. It is reversible, and it does not lose your history.

A realistic checklist

• Want it off Reddit: delete the content, oldest first, then the account.
• Want it off your profile only: use the hide setting, keep the content.
• Want to know what is still visible: search your username against an archive.
• Want it to have never existed: not achievable, by any method or tool.
